Dry Skin Include Small Scabs and Rough Texture

Dry skin (xerosis), sometimes called dry itchy skin, is a condition where the skin has a coarse, rough surface with little or no moisture. Dry skin is usually caused by several environmental conditions including: low humidity, direct sunlight, dry climate, perfume, hair products and other chemicals. The condition does not only appear on the skin, but also on the fingernails and lips. If left untreated, dry skin can be very serious and even life threatening.

Dry skin can result from a few different medical conditions such as: atopic dermatitis, xerosis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. For atopic dermatitis, one has to take into consideration the triggers for itching, avoidance of allergens, and taking proper care of the skin. At the other extreme, dry skin can be caused by environmental factors. In this case, environmental factors such as low humidity, wind, cold climate, showering after a hot shower and excessive bathing can cause dry skin. These environmental factors can also be a cause for xerosis.

Mild cases of xerosis are characterized by the presence of mild itching, skin cracks, redness and mild flaking. More severe cases can lead to cracked lips and bleeding gums. Scaling, peeling, cracking and burning may also occur. This type of dry skin may cause frequent scratching. Dry skin can also be aggravated by the presence of too much saliva in the mouth.

There are many home remedies that people believe can relieve dry skin. However, in most cases, natural remedies do not work. People have been known to spend a lot of money on home remedies that they thought would work, only to find out that they made the problem worse. For example, alcohol and mineral oil have been used to moisturize dry skin, but these ingredients actually dehydrate the skin instead of providing moisture.

You might think that the use of a moisturizer is one way to combat dry skin, but the fact is that too much water loss can actually worsen the condition. The reason for this is because the excessive production of sebum leads to the glands producing even more sebum to replace what is lost. This causes the glands to work overtime and to produce even more oil than usual, leading to even drier skin than before.

Another way to treat dry skin cheaply is to exfoliate the skin using a loofah or a special tool. Excessive scrubbing or using very harsh exfoliates can lead to redness and irritation. Redness can turn into inflammation and pain if the damage goes deeper into the skin. Even if you exfoliate your skin regularly, you may notice a slight decrease in its firmness, but you probably will not suffer from severe cracks or redness.

To treat flaky skin cheaply, try treating it gently with witch hazel lotion or perhaps a cocoa butter cream. Both of these products are very effective in softening the flaking and cracking skin. If you need to heal large cracks in your skin, then a vitamin E cream may be needed, but even this has a soothing effect. There are other home remedies such as using olive oil combined with linen, but these are all best used in case of extreme dryness.

To really treat dry skin may take some time and effort, but it’s important that you don’t give up if it doesn’t improve quickly. Cracks are just signs that your skin is trying to repair itself and that it’s going to take a little while. Some people start seeing improvements after a few weeks of consistent treatment, while others take longer. It may take months of persistent treatment to completely heal your skin. If you have any worries that you are having trouble healing properly, then see your doctor.
