WHAT IS HEALTH

What is Health? What is it that makes a person happy, healthy and in pain? Health, as the World Health Organization defined it, is “the state of full mental, physical and social well being and not the absence of illness and infirmity”. Various definitions have been employed over the years for different purposes. Some people see health as total absence of illness and pain, while other look for it to be a condition that encompasses all the three.

 

Health is a complex issue because it is affected by a person’s attitude and motivation. A person living in a country with a low life expectancy has less chance of living a long and healthy life. A person with high life expectancy is expected to live longer than those with low life expectancy. Attitude and motivation are also related to health. A person who values and believes in a good health alternative has more of a chance of getting it than someone who does not.

 

Healthy habits and attitudes lead to good health. People with good health are less likely to develop physical illnesses. These include diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, tobacco use, blood pressure, and high blood sugar. The quality of these habits and attitudes can also be influenced by poverty, rural poverty, racial or ethnic differences, gender, age, education, sex, and general health. It is believed that physical illness is the result of poor health, while good health is the result of good habits and attitudes.

 

Mental health is a combination of the physical health and the mental health. Therefore, having good physical health is only a part of it. Other components such as good relationships, social support, and well-being, for example, contribute as well. Together, physical well-being, mental well-being, and the good behaviors associated with them provide a framework upon which an individual’s well-being is measured.

 

Maintaining a good balance between physical and mental well-being helps a person maintain a balance between the two. This emotional balance also helps them cope with stress. Stress affects every area of an individual’s life. It can lead to poor health and in worse cases, mental illness.

 

Health and well-being are related because they both affect each other. They go hand in hand. A person with high physical well-being is less likely to get sick or contract a disease. Those with mental illness are more prone to get depressed, have a hard time coping with day to day life, and can develop harmful habits such as substance abuse. If the emotional well-being is also bad, the individual can fall prey to depression.

 

Both health and mental wellness are affected by the amount of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that you consume on a daily basis. The foods that you eat have an impact on your mental well-being as well. In addition to a balanced diet, it is important to supplement your diet with the proper amount of vitamins and minerals. A lack of nutrients can result in a physical illness or disease. This includes low immunity to diseases, such as colds, flu, and the common cold, and other illnesses, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

 

In conclusion, there are many links between health levels and psychology. One might think that these are unrelated but the truth is that psychological disorders can often be a precursor to more serious medical conditions. Therefore, keeping your healthy lifestyle will help you avoid some of the more serious disease related illnesses that are more difficult to treat. Keeping your mental, emotional, and physical health at a healthy level will prevent diseases such as cancer and heart attack, in addition to other problems that can cause discomfort, pain, and even death. It is important to note that although medical doctors and psychologists may disagree about what is health and mental, the fact still remains that both have a role in one’s overall quality of life.
