What is the Importance of Water in Human Health? Many of us take our showers, bathe and wash our dishes with water that comes from the tap. If you ask a health specialist what the importance of water is to human health, most will tell you that it is vital to maintaining the basic body functions, as well as preventing illness.

We need a constant supply of clean, pure water to fuel the body. A good portion of the water that we consume is absorbed through the skin, the hair and the tissues of the body. Without this water, we cannot live. Since the skin covers the most area of the body, it is critical to the human health. Skin problems, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, are all associated with an improper and toxic body environment.


Water is an important part of digestion. It is also used for elimination of waste, which makes it an important part of the digestive process. Our body also uses water to help transport nutrients throughout the body. In fact, without the use of water, the human body would have no way of obtaining oxygen. The lungs rely on water to increase their capacity to breathe. Without water, the carbon dioxide in our breath would make us gasp for air and suffocate.


What is the importance of water in human health? Two of the most common conditions that are associated with a lack of water are arthritis and allergies. Arthritis affects approximately 150 million Americans, most of whom are over the age of fifty. Symptoms of arthritis include pain and swelling of the joints, making them stiff and painful. An allergic reaction is characterized by watery, itchy eyes, hives and a rapid pulse.


Arthritis and allergies are both caused by dehydration, which can lead to serious medical complications if not treated properly. Dehydration can affect the skin, leading to sores, rashes and sometimes infection of the skin. Many of our bodies utilize stored water in the form of urine and saliva; however, when the supply of these liquid substances diminishes, our bodies will seek other means to hydrate themselves.


When the body loses moisture, the brain signals the body to drink, which allows the body to replenish the water it needs. The human body uses two types of liquid to provide hydration: sweat and tears. Since the brain uses the tears to produce sweat, the absence of adequate water in the body can cause the brain to wonder if it needs to go.


Water is vital to all cells in the human body and especially to all living organisms, as it provides the chemical energy for all activity within the cells. When the supply of water diminishes, the cells cannot function as they should. It is not just the brain that loses water when we get dehydrated; all parts of the body will begin to show the effects of dehydration as the system becomes inefficient. Body cells start to die, including those of the skin and muscles. Fatigue and weakness become apparent.


When you lose even a small amount of water, you can feel dizzy, disorientated and weak. When body cells die and the brain is deprived of the water it needs to function, these three symptoms combine to create a weakened human body. Water is an essential part of the human diet, which is often forgotten about during today’s focus on exercise and healthy diets. Although exercise is important, it should not be used as a replacement for water. Water is the most important element for maintaining proper health and is absolutely essential to every person’s well-being.
